Problem was wider than just the EM server.

None of the other colocated boxes (that I know about) at the hosting company were accessible during the down time. I'll send a note to tech support to ask for more info on what happened.

Unscheduled upstream switch replacement...

It was a short period of unscheduled maintenance by an upstream ISP's connection (Videotron).. the server lost its route for about 45 minutes while a switch was replaced.
