Spoiler at back of a hatchback officially non-useless (SAE paper)

http://inderscience.metapress.com/ap...lts,1:110895,1

A Rear Spoiler of a New Type that Reduces the Aerodynamic Forces on a Mini-Van

Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription to either publisher, but if you read the two abstracts together, it's clear that an advanced vortex generating design at the back of a minivan has added downforce and reduced drag.

It sounds to me like turbolator tape or any of the various marketed VG designs could possibly help the Cd of a hatchback, SUV, or van--but I'd really like to get my hands on the actual spoiler involved here. Anybody have journal access or Hualei Chen and Inchul Kim on speed-dial?

I'll try to inter library loan the articles from my university if nobody has a subscription or reports on the findings.

I've seen that before on here, and IIRC it was an intricate spoiler design made to help fill in the wake without creating additional drag in the process.

That is one impressive diy spoiler build. Among the best projects I have seen for street appeal. Thanks for posting it. This is how I want final products in prominent places on the body exterior to look.

You should be able to purchase the Paper from SAE for $22 US,or get it little cheaper downloading it online from their site.It might have images such that you can reconstruct what they did.

OK, Sorry to kill the party here, but there is a huge leap from a very highly designed spoiler for one particular vehicle, to Vortex Generators and Tabulators....

They aren't really on the same planet. So don't go making a case for those VG gimmicks to work based on this paper, it isn't even in the same realm. It isn't even a hatchback. VGs have been shown to have a very small benefit in some very specific cases, anywhere on the back part of a minivan style vehicle is not one of them.

Vortex Generators, still officially useless 99.5% of the time.
