Mississippi State U has produced what looks like a pretty fun & efficient PHEV conversion:

• 104 MPGe
• 50 miles electric range, 550 miles total range
• 0-60 in 5.7 s (1 sec. faster than a normal BRZ auto)
• 2,904 pounds (only ~100 lbs heavier than stock)
• 2 rear-mounted motors (1 per wheel) with torque vectoring
• 12.7 kWh battery pack
• 850 cc series generator
• control algorithms that recognize driving patterns and can predict future driving patterns
• interior not gutted, trunk space preserved
