SuperTrapp Mufflers?

Hello -

EDIT: slurp812 pointed out that these are designed for motorcycles, not cars.

I read about these mufflers today :

S/C Standard
SuperTrapp: Performance Exhaust

Quote:
Hi-temp black coated steel body comes with a corrosion resistant stainless steel core.

Body diameter 3.5”, tapers up to 4” opening (4” disc), or 4.5” diameter, up to a 5” opening (5” disc).

U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor design.

Add 4", or 5" discs to increase horsepower, exhaust tone and flow.

Remove 4", or 5" discs to reduce sound and increase low-end torque.
Assuming they were street legal and assuming they weren't too loud ...

Question: Would the "tunability" of the mufflers make them a good candidate for fuel economy?

On Ecomodder I have read that OEM mufflers are designed to be the "best for the job", but if I had a tunable muffler, then maybe I could tune it "to OEM spec", and then tweak it to be a little more frugal on the MPG side (by increasing low-end torque?!?!?!?!).

My current OEM muffler is still healthy, so I am not in the market, but I am interested in "future possibilities".

I dont think there are any gains to be had unless you have an excessively restrictive system to begin with. If thats the case get a decent aftermarket turbo muffler.

Hello -

For less $$, you could install just the disk tips :

Disk Only
SuperTrapp: Performance Exhaust

Quote:
Add this lightweight tunable 12-disc assembly with a simple mounting adaptor to your existing muffler.

Great for racing and off-road applications that require a minimum amount of sound control.

U.S. Forest Service approved spark arrestor design.

5” external, tunable, stainless steel disc mufflers with a perforated, stainless steel core.

Add 3", 4", or 5" discs to increase horsepower, exhaust tone and flow.

Remove 3", 4", or 5" discs to reduce sound and increase low-end torque.

Ok, then it depends on what you start with.

I dont believe that restriction is ever a good thing, that said small pipes promote velocity which is good too.

My understanding, is that these are to replace OEM mufflers on motorcycles without requiring jetting changes.

I like the idea of being able to 'tune' my exhaust. It'd be fun to play with. I bet there's not too much to it, i.e. make a homemade version.

Ha ha, I think you're right, mea culpa! When I was looking at the website, the ordering details looked like they were "motorcycle-centric", especially with the "spark arrestor" comment. Still, I wonder if the "disk tips" could be adapted all by themselves.

They do make them for automotive apps too. IMO they are a muffler for the buyer that is looking for a particular sound, not the type when looking for the most flow.

I always get a chuckle when people refer to their butt-meter when refering to HP gains from exhaust products. The car sounds more powerful and people physcologically think their car is faster when it actually may be an immeasurable change.

The nice feature is they are tunable, by adding or subtracting the number of discs and spacers.
