tips to inncrease mpg for a metro convertible.

I am new here and there is probably a place here with all this info, so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I have been thinking about getting a convertible 91 geo metro. I wanted a 5 speed manual transmission because I heard automatics tend to overheat and burn up. I did find a good automatic though that is in really good shape. It only gets 40 mpg. (I am still jealous of the 91 xfi, but my wife says it is too ugly.) So, my question is "Does anyone have any tips for increasing mpg of a 90 automatic convertible?"
