Top Gear--- Electric, ugly, and awesome

Just ran across this, home made EV SUV looking thing, very ugly but it DID get over 60mph.

I love that thing, it's utterly comic. Calling it an SUV is a bit generous though, as it is neither sporty nor capable of any practical utility :P What does interest me, however is the use of a diesel generator to power the batteries. Surely this is the most efficient form of fossil/electric powertrain, essentially making it akin to a fuel cell vehicle. Has anyone on here undertaken a project of this sort?
