Nissan drops an entire Camry Hybrid engine + tranny in the Altima and sells a tiny number of copies a year.

Ford (and hence Mazda, in the Tribute at least) developed their own system in-house, and discovered it would be cheaper to pay royalties to Toyota than to work around Toyota's patents. It's all Ford tech, though, AFAIK.

Toyota has to pay another company for use of its patents on hybrid technology even though said company never produced anything.
