Fixey! EV conversion pics added

I got this fixed gear cruiser out of the trash a few months back. I've been saving it for an EV bike conversion. Its got coaster brakes, my favorite. I've worked out a hybrid drive using mostly the junk parts I have on hand. I'll be using a 500w 24v scooter motor and chain drive. I have a nice freewheel that will allow me to pedal or drive the motor independently. If it works well enough I'll replace the tires with road tires and upgrade to 18amp hr batts.

That's a pretty sweet trash pick! Can't wait to see some updates with it.

Nice find!

What kind of "transmission" system are you planning to use?

I'm still trying to work it out. It has to be hybrid drive. The pedals and motor must freewheel separately.

What is the rear axle spacing? 120, 130, 135mm?

You could do a fix/free flip-flop rear hub. Drive one side with the motor and one side with the pedals. Problem is that the motor side would have to drive the fixie side of the hub, so you'd need a freewheel on the motors output shaft.

Other options include a friction drive, a hub motor, or using a surly dingle cog or other cassette hub.

What I'm currently doing is a left side drive for the motor. The wheel is very narrow maybe 120mm or smaller. Right now the cheapest option I have is a spoke mounted gear. I can get the hardware at the link below. I've got to figure out what chain there using in that pic. I can probly shop around for something cheaper.

http://www.kingsmotorbikes.com/bicycle_parts.htm

The goal is to buy the pack and parts for less than $100.

So currently the plan is left side drive chain running to an intermediate shaft that has a coaster built in. Intermediate shaft is driven by the motor.

Current gear reduction calcs as follows
2500rpm motor 11t gear
27" wheel with 44t spoke gear

2500rpm motor w/11t to 44t = 625rpm @ Ishaft. 44t & 18t coupled at Ishaft. Ishaft 18t to 44t @ wheel gives 249 rpm x 27" wheel hieght for 20mph on power alone. Theoretical of course. Is that complicated enough. Sorry I don't have visual.

8mm 44 tooth gear $20
spoke gear adaptor $12
44 tooth spoke gear $13 + $5

total $50.

Currently spoke drive and gears are going to cost me $50. Unless I find them cheaper. I have a real soft set of EXIT light batteries that I can use for a temp pack. I know I'll need to buy some chain at some point.

I started on the left side drive today the pics show the 34t gear that I intend to weld to the out side edge of the spoke ring. I will then weld the 44t and 34t together(for strength and proper stand off).

More trash finds today. I grabbed these because my brother needs a wheel. I needed the some gears to build a gearset to better pull my trailer. Right now I have a 34t,26t,23,18,16,14 something like that. Anyway the the difference between the 34t and the 26t is annoying, especially when hauling my trailer.

Check out the rack. I paid money for one last year The chopper bike is pretty cool also. My brother gave me a working minibike today and I intend to convert the chopper to gas!
