My main prompting for this is this autospeed article. It is an article where they dyno test a car with different length intake pipes on it. The different lengths effect the torque curve. I know we aren't tuning for power, but it must have some effect on fuel economy.

So they confirmed the ram air effect on an engine?

1989 firebird mostly stock. Aside from the 6-speed manual trans, corvette gen 5 front brakes, 1LE drive shaft, 4th Gen disc brake fbody rear end.

More TQ = More MPG. No, I don't have any 'scientific' data on this, but common sense of a powerful thing.

In a gasoline engine more torque also means you burned more fuel.
Unfortunately most of the stuff that gives a gasoline engine more power also makes it burn more fuel.

Diesel engines on the other hand, things that increase hp and torque don't always lower mpg.

My takeaway from that article was that running a stubby "CAI" off the intake manifold was a dumb idea, and anything longer was an improvement. I quickly agreed with the first line of their conclusion:
