Any competent driver should be able to avoid that, simply by not following the car ahead so closely.

Whatever. Not if the car in front makes the maneuver as evasive. Think about it. Real world rush hour traffic pattern. Whatever.

Point is, autonomous systems meant to make driving safer should do more than nothing when encountering a stopped vehicle directly ahead, especially if it's a fire truck.

I'm a huge fan of AV tech, which is why I'm critical of it.

Most impressive.

At the Battery Day, Elon Musk said he is driven by the latest alpha build everywhere he goes.

The software was rewritten from the ground up for reasons I forget. And it will talk to your future home HVAC system and PowerWall in the background.

It sounded like they had painted themselves into a corner with the previous build such that solving a problem couldn't be accomplished from where they stood with it.

Scrapping fundamental code has got to be a last resort considering the effort that had gone into it, so this must have been necessary. I wonder if crashing into stationary fire engines has anything to do with it?

From what I read about the rewrite it seems the first version did object labeling on a per frame base while the new version labels objects in the composite 360 overview.
The first version was fairly good in interpreting everything visible in a frame, but wasn't too good in correlating the data to other camera views and earlier frames. This hampers movement detection and depth perception, and as a consequence it puts a limit to what the neural network can make sense of.

The new version is dramatically better in that respect. Basically 2D versus 3D perception. This produces much less labeling with much higher quality.

Tesla Autopilot is better than you think! Here's why.
The technology is impressive, but it's still a glorified line follower.

If the lines are wrong or missing it goes crazy. There are several examples in this compilation: (Not all clips are caused by that, but I'm sure you can spot which are)

redpoint5 — Local maxima.

I just finished listening to Tesla Battery Day Postmortem with Sandy Munro and Bob Galyen - Autoline Exclusives LIVE.

Somewhere in the 1:34:20 Sandy Munro points out the chip Tesla uses. They dropped Nvidia and rolled their own. Munro & Associates doesn't even have a way to test/reverse engineer it.

In the video redpoint5 posted the software draws boxes around parked cars that are occluded and establishes a temporary lane edge past the cars sticking out varying amounts.
