Universal Lubricant's recycled Eco Ultra motor oil hits Amazon.com

Pretty cool IMO. I might have to give it a try. Ironically I just picked up two cases of oil last night. I think I paid $38 for 6 qts for mobil one 0W-30 Mobil 1.

According to the EcoUltra website, they offer 5W20, 5W30, 10W30, and ATF.

Quote:
Made in the U.S. at the company's "re-refinery," Eco Ultra is an American Petroleum Institute (API) certified synthetic blend of engine oil that meets or exceeds the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) requirements and most vehicle manufacturers' specifications. Why choose recycled motor oil? Well, according to John Wesley, chief executive officer of UL, "Using re-refined oil cuts fossil fuel use, lowers greenhouse gas emissions and reduces harmful environmental impacts on our Nation's waterways."

...

Six quarts of "re-refined" 5W-30 oil will set you back a relatively reasonable $35.55.

A recycled synthetic? Can one separate standard motor oil from synthetic once mixed?

Synthetic oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Synthetic oil is a lubricant consisting of chemical compounds that are artificially made (synthesized). Synthetic lubricants can be manufactured using chemically modified petroleum components rather than whole crude oil, but can also be synthesized from other raw materials."

By that definition, any recycled oil is 'synthetic'.

they probably run the oil through a LOP (Lube Oil Purifier, Centrifugal Fuel and Lube Oil Purifiers : Oil Separator : Alfa Laval : Separation Equipment Company, Inc. ) to get all the crud out, and then add chemicals as required to get the oil back to normal limits.

Here is another article from autoblog on what Valvoline is doing with recycling/reprocessing oil. There are a lot more details with how its done in this write up.

DO NOT USE THIS OIL, it's only good for lighting barbecues

sorry but
DO NOT USE THIS OIL, it's only good for lighting barbecues
http://www.ecoultraoil.com/user/file/E0-14.pdf
this oil is not to be used in any engine on any car
it does NOT meet GM DEXOS1 or DEXOS2 so it is not a valid oil for any GM car or truck current or from the past GM dexos information center

this garbage oil does not meet a single European specification and as such
MUST NOT BE USED IN
VW , AUDI , BMW , MERCEDES BENZ , VOLVO , SAAB

Have any of the guys on BITOG done any testing with this oil to see how good/bad it really is? Just because they haven't passed some specs doesn't mean its junk. However, if you have an oil analysis to backup the claim I'd totally agree with you.

there are no ACEA test specifications
NONE
any quality oil will either be
ACEA A1 A5 - B1 B5 like the GM DEXOS1 oil , this oil us not as good as the ACEA A3 B3-A3 B4 oils but it is still an outstanding lubricant much better than the junk oil referenced in the OP , it is designed to maximize fuel economy , not quite as good in resistence to shear or deposit control
or
ACEA A3 B3- A3 B4 as in the European specified oils
of which each OEM also has their own specification as the VW Audi use a minimum 0f 502 and the latest VW Audi Engine require LL03 504 / 507 specification

EVERY European OEM mandates oils of minimum specification
ACEA A3 B3 - A3 B4 and in addition their own proprietary specifications
failure to use specified oils voids the warranty on GM and the European cars

the benefits of using ACEA A3 B3 - A3 B4 oil in any engine should not be taken lightly , oils with that specification are infinitely superior
in resistance to shear and deposit control compared to the junk oil referenced in the OP

the oil vendor mentioned in the original post
does not test their oil to ACEA specification , most likely because
it will not pass them -
the oil is NOT to be used because it is JUNK .

this information can not be gleaned in a few minutes of surfing
you need to study and learn about engine lubrication
one good source is the BITOG forums , before you learn why you should -
stop using the dogshnit oil
it matters

after you learn
you will understand why
ready
begin
