what will it take for carmakers to stick a straight sheet underneath every car... sure we can make them park themselves, make it freeze inside in the middle of summer, while have engine bays that require you to take half the car appart to change somethign....but a flat undertray.... we're woring on it...

The whole reason they dont, I think, is that all they are concerned with is the public perception, or what is in vogue....they round off the corners of cars in the rear, to give the perception that the car is aerodynamic, meanwhile that is actually counter-aero. No one looks underneath, so they dont bother. Only now with gas approaching $5/gal are they starting to close off some areas, but aside from spending $250k on an SLR or Ferrari, you wont be seeing a bellypan like this anywhere yet.

If I am not mistaken the primary goal of the 190D sheilds were for noise supression.

There dual purpose I think, the w201 embodied MB's latest design and technological improvements, suspension, aerodynamics, economy and refinement where all radically better than what had gone before (the w123)

When I saw your thread title I was kinda expecting a beat up w123 diesel with a few sheets of ply and ally stuck under it!
