A really good free antivirus is microsoft security essentials. If you're seriously paranoid and thats not good enough for you, use linux (linuxmint.com is a good option). Its immune to 99.9999% of viruses (viruses are written with win32 executables which do not run on linux).

My computer was hijacked by a virus two months ago after I was looking at the Kubota diesel Lotus 7 clone site. I don't blame anyone but found it frustrating.
