I just saw that there is an electric bike you can buy at Walmart:

That's insanely inexpensive! I wonder if they're available up here in Canuckistan...

We sold one at Target a few years ago when I used to work there, I'm pretty sure that every one we sold got returned within a year, completely dead.
For only $300, I'm a bit skeptical about it's potential longevity.



I can't even determine where the motor is in this pic. Might be a rear hub motor, but those are a bit expensive. Looks like it may be mounted friction-style in the little box on the back of the seat tube.

I believe it's a separate chain driven setup.

I suspect the biggest issue is the batteries. The average person will KILL their batteries through neglect/under/overcharging. The comments/reviews seem to support that. A good investment would be a proper $50-$100 smart charger to go along with the new bike.

Either that or fuss around with a voltmeter to keep an eye on things.

I don't see a chain running to the other side of the rear hub, or a timing chainring on the other side...
For $300 I'm still thinking friction, it's definitely the cheap way to go.

is it possible that box near the pedals drives a gear on the pedals? if you zoom the image in you can see what looks like something on the back side opposite the chain drive.

If you zoom the picture really far and look at the pedal assembly it looks photoshopped though so it is hard to say.
