went and looked at a car today

well two cars

a 1985 VW Golf Diesel and a 1987 Golf 4 cyl gasser. Both for $800 or 500 for each.

Lets just say it was a waste of my time and I'll chalk up the money wasted on fuel to the stupid tax. But, if my calculations are correct I did net 28 mpg on the high way... very cool

Also, I don't think i could drive anything lesser than my Mercedes.. I'm just soo used to all of the things in it, and the smell of a 23 year old german car.. it's just not the same in a lesser, smaller VW that smells like mold and old milk!

oh.. and I ditched work to go look at the cars then go work on a delorean... aren't I just great

(ps.. i've never ditched work, even with a massive headcold, I still went in)

At least you made the effort. Were the cars in good running order, or did they look like they needed a lot of $$$ to make reliable?

I think my limit is 1996 or newer due to my "OBDII Addiction". Maybe the only exception to that would be a 2nd Gen CRX with fuel injection.

But, I could also get along with less. I would delete the AC (in Los Angeles) if I didn't have to worry about passenger hospitality. I would convert the windows to manual if it wasn't such a PITA.

they were not worth me effort. The diesel had rust in all the usual spots. Front winshield, around the windows, missing drivers side door handle, bad respray, front end damage and more rust... The seller was an idiot, for lack of better words.

The moldy/crayon smell is very widespread in VWs. It's a combination of water in the cabin coming from either leaky seals or the AC condensner, and the soundproofing wax they use, that never really cures. The problem hasn't been fixed to date!

I know about the crayon smell, my Mercedes has it as well but its not from any leaks(I have none). But the smell of mold and old milk just isn't factory

You're right, it didn't roll off the showroom floor smelling like that. It got that way due to manufacturing and design defects.
