I like to call this man-miles per gallon, but everyone else seems to be going with mpgpp, so whatevs.

Latest tank on my DD, 49.8 Wife and I and older son carpool and all get out within a couple of miles of each other, to keep the math easy I'll say we get out together, so:

149.4 mpgpp

I really like that term. We should make it official. Actually, an official glossary of terms used on this forum would be nice.

There is one. It's a sticky in Forum News

And I dropped MMPG in there.

In all the years I have been on here, I have never looked in there!

According to Wikipedia - so you know the information is 100% reliable - a 747-400 is good for about 91 MMPG if flying with a full load of passengers.

I'd be curious to know how well newer, ostensibly more efficient aircraft stack up.

According to the same article, Amtrak trains only average about 52 MMPG. I think I know part of the reason why Amtrak is such a money pit. That is, for instance, over 20 times the energy consumption per passenger of the Comboios de Portugal, which is admittedly a much more modern and heavily used line (although Amtrak's Northeast Corridor is a lot less antiquate than some of its other gear).

Looking at the numbers, the ridership on that Portuguese network must be pretty high.

If you aren't in a hurry you can cover a lot of distance on a ham sandwich and a glass of water.

Sailboat = all the miles powered by a giant fusion reactor, conveniently already removed to the minimum safe distance of 92 million miles.

How about 1,000 miles on a cheap single speed bicycle using a gallon's worth of calories. Half of which you were going to consume anyway.
