Two of my favorite anti-tailgater bumper stickers I've seen are "If you can read this, you're TOO DAMN CLOSE!" and "Unless you're a hemorrhoid, GET OFF MY ASS!".

As for pulling over for tailgaters, I didn't pull over and stop. I decelerated a few mph and moved to the right of the lane to encourage them to pass. These tailgaters I encouraged to pass were so close I couldn't see their headlights. That's way too close for comfort.

Thats always tempting, but I find flashing the hazards works just as well, and doesn't make people angry or risk a crash

Funny you should say that. Because a few years back, this chic was tailgating me and I brake checked her and the guy tailgating her hit her. Karma's a mean woman I guess.

This weekend on one of Michigan's skating rink highways, a red Civic blew past me. It had a vanity plate that said KAMKAZIE. Very fitting and was surprised to not see it in the ditch farther up the road.

A friend of mine did that and ended up underneath the X5 that annoyed him. Not a good idea.

I find just slowing, gradually, you know - ease off the pedal, out of gear coasting kind of works nicely, plus it winds them up even more. See how long it takes for them to get the message to back off.

I had one guy (the only one behind me) down to 15 mph before he worked it out. My dad (police) taught me this one, his reasoning was that he would prefer to have them pass and to be able to see the moron and react to their moron-ness rather than trust to luck.

I was with him once when younger (about 10) when a biker tailgated him and then blasted past in a 30 zone with the Vs. So my dad just followed him to the pub he was going to. We parked and my dad got out of his 998cc 40 hp Mini (in tasteful 70s lime green) and walked over.

The biker was laughing with his mates pointing at this guy he had just "blown off". Then my dad got out his warrant (police ID in the UK) card. The colour went from proud red to "arse evacuation pale" in under a second and his friends kind of wandered away during the "interview".

He also said about undertaking (on the left here in the UK where we drive on the "correct" side ) that if there is room for you to pass safely then there was room for them to move over.

Funny thing was, he never did the "traffic" cop thing, was a village bobby.

I HATE tailgaters. I hate riding with them, as well.
werd, I hate riding in the car with a tailgating driver.... especially one whose front bumper is smashed so you KNOW they don't learn from their mistakes..

but tailgaters behind me? they improve my MPG! I don't try to keep people behind me or dictate how they should drive, but if i'm doing the speed limit and there aren't 4+ cars stacked behind me... they can fill my wake as much as they want.
