It's kind of like sewing your own clothes. You can buy tshirts for less than you can buy material and thread for. But people make their own for the sense of accomplishment, to have something unique, and maybe sometimes to save some money. My mods might never pay out, but I'll have the only one like it in town.

A) Saving money 40% College student
B) Reducing CO2 emissions 10%
C) Reducing pollutant emissions (CO, HC, NOx, PM, etc) 5% Tailpipe emissions, power plant emissions, refinery and oil tanker emissions...
D) A fun hobby 5%
E) Other (please specify) 40% Reducing the need to drill for oil and destroy ecosystems.

REDUCE, reuse, recycle. Yeah, it's good to put that water bottle in the recycling bin, but what's more important is not buying it in the first place: drink from the fountain, or reuse a glass or bottle. This reduction in consumption ties back into saving money. Definite overlap there.

I don't think I can put a percentage for the categories. I am driving a quite old diesel car (Opel Astra G 2.0 DTI) and my motivation for ecomodding comes from some deficient design due to cost reduction. I am not happy with the geometry of the front bumper (without fog lights) that for sure creates additional drag. My monthly medium fuel consumption considering 50% on highway (130 km/h and +) and 50% city and national roads is around 6l/100km ( 39.2 mpg ). Sure I would like to drop the consumption with 15%. I like also to have a customized car, but I will not add "bling" that will reduce the performance of the car.

I'm not really into this game for the money, though it's nice to see hypermiling will pay for my yearly road tax + insurance if I can keep my FE around 4.5L/100km or 52 mpg.
That's about 500 Euro / year.

I'd rather pollute less, burn less oil (which we'll need for more worthy purposes in future), and at the same time pour less money into the hands of despicable companies / despicable countries / religious zealots.

I started getting serious about hypermiling due to the most recent increase in gasoline costs. I have not gotten to the point of actually making any modifications to my scion xD yet. So to answer this question honestly I guess I'll have to say 'we'll see'.

My additional 40-50% of a tank (each one costs £60-70 at the moment) means I have paid for my annual tax (£130) in 3-4 tanks which is 3 months of so. Unfortunately insurance on Helga is high as she is sporty...
