Time to buy new tires... opted to stay with 13" 9.7lb wheels and buy Michelin Defenders, rather than buying $89 Helium 15" 11.5 lb wheels and larger Bridgestone Ecopia tires. I'll lose some gearing advantages on the freeway, but the cost is right and I'll have lower rotational mass closer to the hub. I hope the tires are good.

I had just bought a set of those shortly before selling my car. I approve of your choice. I didn't get much time on them, and that was winter, so I can't comment on their performance.
It makes no sense for you to go up in size and add weight. You did the right thing.

If you can find 14s, there are still some RE92s out there.

I still have and have been using the original 1998 stock 14" alloys, which weigh about 16lbs - 18lbs. The 13" VX wheels at 9.7lbs. So the difference is significant.

That sounds heavy - VW 14" stock steelies weigh 13 lbs / 5.9kg.

I know. Seems heavy, but I weighed them (imprecisely) on a bathroom scale by holding them, tires on, and standing on the scale. The I subtracted my measured weight and approx 17 lbs for the tires. Lastly, I compared my figure with wheelweights.net, which shows Honda Civic steels up around 20 lbs and 1990 Si cast alloys at 16 lbs. ...so I figure it is about right. For what it's worth, wheelweights.net shows VW wheels to be slightly lighter in general.

I couldn't speak to RR of any tire, or the weight of any tire or rim, but I continue to hear they are the very lowest of RR. Sounds like you have a good plan set!  |
