VW start stop hack

I am planning on purchasing a vw passat. I already have a passat that i bought for my mom (2010 1.8 TSI, 6.3L/100km my current average).

It has a dsg and i am fairly happy eith it except when parked on steep hills where it sucks. For my purchase dsg will not be a deciding factor unless the start stop feature can be hacked on the manual transmission so i can do engine off coasting. I searched the forum but was unable to find anything.

Has this been done before? Tjese cars do not really have a key anymore so it is not possible to switch the engine off

For a normal petrol engine you'll be able to do the usual kill switch and bump start, but you'll also have to switch off stop/start at the same time.

P&G with EOC is for NA engines with low gearing. In a high geared turbo there's little point to it, and in some cars, it's actually worse.

I know the 1.2TSI shows around 0.4l/hr at idle (the 1.8 a bit higher obviously), so it's really not worth the effort of a kill switch, just use neutral coast.

The 1.8 tsi consumes 0.8-1.2 l/h while idling.

I was thinking of getting the 1.6 tdi manual.

Would coasting down to stop lights etc be beneficial with the engine cut off in advance.

Just curious if it can be hacked, it should already have start stop.

If you simply kill the engine, stop start will try to restart it - if you run out of fuel for example, the engine will just keep cranking.

On a TDI I don't think you'll be able to kill the engine without a mass of warning lights and logged fault codes.

I wonder if the ecu can be hacked for this.

Trying to automate functions that are best left manual is fraught with difficulty.

Diesels have so little engine braking that you may as well just DFCO to a stop. P&G is a thing for throttled engines, not diesels any way. You'll see better numbers just keeping in 'lean burn' than using P&G.

Seems like a viable project to me. I'm a bit of a noob to car-hacking using computers but here is a good list of tools that I found so far:

- Car Hacking 101: Tools of the Trade | Make:

The Stop/Start system would be interesting to have even on non-vw cars. So whatever algorithm you came up with for that could be a generic template for other cars.

To me, I would pick gps based start-stop. Because many logic-assumptions would be based on things like distance to the next traffic lights and current speed, are you going up a known incline or down.

Yes, the Honda Jazz/Fit has that type of sensor in its gearbox already to read incline but what fun is that - especially if that is not your car.

I'm swaying to using a Raspberry-Pi for all this because of the higher-level software tools. Using pieces from the above link you could actually start implementing some of this soon.

Did I tell you I know OpenCV (computer-vision) programming ? you could detect a green light with a camera module especially if it's at a known point.

You can colour mask it to find out if it's green or red.
