Congrats! Next fill will tell if it was realistic or not. What mods/techniques were used?

Hey, rcorf,

34 mpg in a Ranger is pretty good. But that's based on a pretty short fill, which isn't a really reliable yardstick. Let it run through a couple of full tanks and we - and more importantly, you - can see if it's delivering at that level consistently.

You told us a fair amount about Stinky in the garage page, I wasn't aware you could even get a 3.45 R&P on the four-cylinder Ranger. It must be pretty mellow on the highway.

Any big aero plans? There's over 100 Rangers in the Garage listing but only 11 have participated in the fuel log updates this year. And of those, maybe half have done any aero mods, usually not much more than a tonneau on the bed.

My 97 Ranger had the 3.45 and the .79 OD (5th gear) Mazda tranny. If you want to keep your average speeds around 25 mph 40 mpg is not out of the question.
Also never use a floor jack on the center of the differential to jack the truck up or you could wreck the rear axle. That's right out of the owners manual.

regards
mech

This past spring I bought a 98 ranger 2.5 4 cyl w/345 diff and it got between 34-35 mpg. I didn't keep it long, my daughter saw it and wanted it for my grandson as a first vehicle. I found another 98 ranger with 2.5 4 cyl w/410 diff and it averaged 29 mpg. I changed the diff to a 374 and now it gets 34 mpg. Good little trucks. No mods on either truck. I can see getting over 40, maybe 50 mpg with aero mods and some adj to the nut behind the wheel.

Any updates, rcorf? I see another entry in your fuel log -- different driving?
