Lotus did a load of research into anti-noise to make cars quieter in the early 1990s. They applied the noise of a Ferrari to a 1.0 Citroen AX (45 bhp) just for fun - they noted that it increased the average RPM used by drivers and reduced their MPG quite a bit.
