Apparently the concrete itself takes up the thermal effect.
There are no (transverse) joints to take up the expansion and contraction.
There are some longitudinal joints as the entire width wasn't always laid in one go, but there's no ill effect because of that.
Road salt is not an issue.
No thermal effects like serious cracking or heaving either.
Most of the "damage" consists of clean, straight cuts - obviously purpose made for whatever reason - and very minor cracking that doesn't impair ride quality at all.
While the road showed signs of use after a couple decades, it is still one of the best roads we have despite the coarse surface.
We have some smoother roads, but that smoothness doesn't last very long - 3-4 years if that much.
