I rarely drive just to burn down a tank, but I have been known to "cruise" or drive around for the sake of sight seeing or just for the joy of driving. If you like it, do it. As a hypermiler, you're using less gas than most people who drive around for no reason.

Car enthusiasm is just another hobby. It uses gas, yes, but knitting uses yarn, which involves raising sheep. Cooking as a hobby wastes foodstuffs. Horseback riding wastes hay and grain.

Do what you like, and if you like driving go drive. I like to set a historic or cultural landmark as a destination and go for a drive...
