I have been tempted to do this because of curiosity about the effect of some change on my fuel economy. My inner-cheapskate always wins and I don't do it. It sort of feels like cheating anyway, I would feel like I had somehow gamed the system and that the current tank didn't count. That's as big a deterrent as the cost of fuel is.

If I want to go for a ride just to ride, I'll hop on my motorcycle and get 55mpg+ while driving with no attempt at efficiency and enjoying the smell of the fields as I go by.
