In 5 years and 600 hours of piston single time I have had 2 certified ignitions fail. Aircraft typically have 2 magnetos for performance, (because they suck) and for redundancy, (because they suck in a second more serious way).

In 18 years and who knows how many hours/miles (in < 1 year I have driven 20000 miles at a educated guess averaging 35mph for a total of 570 hours) I have had 1 electronic ignition fail that caused the engine to quit.

Most of the noncertified electronic ignition systems I have seen are dual redundant systems as well, because once in a great while one could, possibly, eventually fail...maybe. And as you say you can't just pull over when the engine stops.

I'll just stop here because it's o.t. and I could write a 5 page paper on virtues of various noncertified systems and the FAA's bureaucratic obstructionism and it's cost to the industry.
