My point is that magnetic variance can be taken out of the equation.
It is not to blame for recent changes, and the report suggest it won't have much effect if it does occur.

We may be flogging the horse, along with volcanoes and who knows what. Maybe the volcanoes hurt the horse more than we do - but we're flogging it nonetheless. We may not be the single cause that kills it, but we do hurt it.
