Coasting in Neutral (Auto transmission)

I've been experimenting with shifting my transmission into neutral while going downhill (No use of brakes either). I’ll be in neutral for up to 2-3 minutes. Of course, with the scangauge, I’ve noticed that my currently MPG goes up quite a bit. I figured that this would increase my overall MPG, but it hasn’t. So from this simple experiment, I’ve seen no difference in MPG with car in drive or in neutral.
