The fuel gauge was noted to have moved from F quite quickly on the next tank. The average should round-out any errors in the long run. The ""first-click"" method has been used as a consistent fill for all vehicles tested.

- After driving about 50 miles on this tank, I noticed that the MFD showed about 59-60 MPG (so far, it has been about +5% off, but a really good tank was forming)
- Throughout the remaining tank, I really drove it carefully: slower acceleration, avoided using Battery Assist as much as possible, and kept the speed down.
-Weather conditions were OK, not great -- it got chilly and windy for several days, but the FE didn't drop much.
-ECON Button: Off when I wanted precise throttle input / On when needing more charge or for engine auto-stop.
-Slower routes were chosen for less wind resistance.

2011-04-23 434 9.121 $3.66 47.58 "First true road trip for the Hybrid: from Home, up to Omaha (with some driving around there), and back home.

Average speed: 57 mph.

I tried 10-under the limit (60/70) and after a while, compromised on 5-under, with my passenger (65/70).

Day 1 Wind: 20 MPH to almost exactly 90-degrees side-wind -- vectoring it to ~10 on the nose. A/C used with temps in the high 70's
Day 2 Wind: Perfect 25-30 MPH NNW Wind directly on the tail, but cooler temps: ranging from 53-65F. No A/C needed.

I was surprised at how good the car performs on long trips. The seats are very supportive, the hatch opening allows convenient loading of luggage, and the iPod connector allowed for ""consensus control"" through the head unit.

At higher speeds, it really struggles on hills, often changing CVT ratios to allow 4K RPM, or even higher if the battery was spent. 47-48 MPG is still pretty good for this trip -- no complaints here.

The multi-function display has an overly optimistic FE average, but a rough guesstimate of 5% less is generally pretty close.

The cruise control with the ECON button engaged is frankly ridiculous. It's supposed to drop a few MPH on hills/load (like an EcoDriver would), but halfway up the hill, it decides to accelerate back to the setpoint at high RPM and isn't very economical (it needs to be truly load-based, . So, the ECON setting was left ""off"" which cycled the A/C more aggressively. Honestly, the EPA tested the car with both modes and found no statistically significant difference in FE."
