Either could work. Just make sure the frame is plenty strong. A neighbor motorized a classic frame and had the chain stay bend when the drive seized. A donor weed eater or chain saw could have a clutch and a trigger throttle. Clutches come in chain or cog belt configurations. Hilliard is a manufacturer here that sells drive train parts.

Well, winter is finally behind us I think, I got to ride my bike to work two days this week! Still no additional power but I think I’m just gonna do an electric kit instead of gas...

For hill country I recommend any electric kit have regenerative and dynamic braking settings. The Lime bikes are using Bafang hub motors in the rear. Check the other threads in this grouping.
