Yes. I wish that in a lot of climates, studded snow tires were illegal. Here in Portland for instance, they just tear up the concrete during our rainy winter. We get MAYBE a day or two of snow a year. Lots of people try to justify it by saying they need it when they go up to the mountain, but honestly chains take like 4 minutes to put on a car if you REALLY need the traction.

Cables FTL except in emergencies- they're not something you leave on one mile more than you have to.

I'm not a fan of snows, but at least they're real tires.

People really like to pick on studded snow tires.

I had my first chance to drive a car in the snow without snow tires this winter. I didn't realize just how much I was gaining by driving my car on snow tires for all of these years! In our typical lake affect snow, I was amazed at how poorly the car did with brand new Cooper touring tires!

Something so light with tires that aren't designed for snow could be dangerous in the snow.

Meh, I used to live in the upper peninsula of Michigan area. We got tons of snow. I drove a 1993 Toyota Tercel, about the same weight as the new Mirage. I never had any problems with all season tires. You just gotta slow down and be careful.

snow tires

Re: the snow tires...

You could go up one size, or down one size: 175/65/14's (more common, multiple brands) or 155/65/14's (which are very light LRR Nokians, harder to find).

And I'd expect that recently discontinued 165 width winter tires in the 165/65/14 size would come back on the market when the car arrives here.

With an hour commute each day in the BC Mountains I've found studded winters a necessity. I had non-studded winters on the civic until December, but after doing 30 (km/h) in town and sliding through turns I wasn't going to take any more chances.

That said, I agree that most coastal people just need to learn how to drive and at best grab a nice set of non-studded winters for heading up the ski hill.
