I have been sidelined by repairs to two cars, but I am still chasing this goal this summer. Anyone else?

I'm chasing a 50mpg tank, personally, but I'm towing frequently.

First World Problems here:
I'm working from home so I don't have a daily commute. All the driving I do is special case stuff like towing or full of people with AC required. So my tank is terrible (upper 40's), but it's been 3 months since I filled it.

70 MPG Mirage tank - unexpected success!

I filled up on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised with a 70 MPG tank!

3.36 L/100 km = 70.6 MPG US over 702 km / 436 miles.

I honestly wasn't expecting it -- it included the above-pictured 50 MPG trailer run to get rid of brush & branches. The SG said 66 (not quite dialed in, obviously), but the factory gauge said 3.4.

Driving conditions were pretty ideal this tank: hot & dry, and not too windy.

It was my usual summer driving routine on lightly travelled back roads with max posted limits of 80 km/h / 50 mph (most of the time on cruise control, tapping speed up & down for hills). Also includes going through a bunch of little towns & villages where I get lots of opportunities to bump up the MPG average with EOC to stops & turns, etc.

This was my first time cracking 70 (for a tank) in a Mirage. And that'll be this year's high water mark for the car - I'm going to park it soon and put the MPGiata back on the road until mid-fall.

Welp. Beaten by a Mirage.

I have no excuses left.

Right now I am filling up about every two months. My May fillup was fine, but my July one was the worst ever!

All that I do is drive errands and drive my brother to get food. City driving here isn't like city driving in... a [big] city, but when my brother starts wiping sweat I turn on the air conditioner, which is compounded by drive-throughs and waiting for the carhop at Sonic.

I still remember my nephew's first time riding in the Metro:

"Why don't you turn on the air conditioning?"

"This car doesn't have air conditioning."

"WHAT? I thought all cars had air conditioning!"

"It also doesn't have anti-lock brakes, stability control or 10 airbags. HOLD ON!!"

I've been wanting a repeat of that 72 mpg tank but I've been stuck in the high 50s. :/

"Stuck in the high 50s" ... is a phrase almost never used about a 1992 Ford Tempo unless refering to MPH.
