When they did my timing belt, they replaced water pump and thermostat too.

So they could have very well put a low temp thermostat in.

Forgive my ignorance, but whats a SIL? Is that anything like the Check Engine Light, (CEL)?

ahh, thank you kind sir,... as for the issue. I only have suggestions and not 1st hand experience, but the shift lights and lean burn are greatly affected by vacuum and engine load. I'd start by looking for any vacuum leaks.

Under side of the hood is a map of the vacuum lines, you can spray carb cleaner on possible leaks to see if it changes the engine sound, you can also listen with a piece of hose for what will sound like an air leak.

Also if the 02 is going bad you will get no sil. Does the check engine light work? Come on when starting car then go out? If you have the light in while driving you will also have no sil. Good luck.

The O2 sensor is new. The CEL definitely works and is not on while driving.
