This is an interesting discussion.

I'm fascinated with the different performance between Echo and Xb mileage... and the differences slight modifications can make to efficiency. By the same token, the XB is a far more commodious vehicle... and a very good compromise between efficiency and accomodation.

xBuser, if you haven't left yet, and have time, and don't need to take more than one passenger, take out your rear seat! Here is an insanely well detailed take-apart of a Scion interior, with seat removal instructions. I did this when I went to Burning Man, and found it relatively easy, and the seats are heavy enough that it will make a difference in MPG. (warning: lots of high-res pics below if you have a slow connection it will be slooow) You just need a socket wrench and maybe 20 mins. of time. You'll be amazed at the room it opens up back there if you ever need to use the xB for even more hauling duty - remember, it's much more aero to carry things inside than on the roof!

Take out back seat

Thanks for the good idea. I want to take it out some time ago. But, this time I will have 3 people in the car and some stuff for camping. So, I will try next time. I believe that will help me to break 40mpg barrier.

I get ~41 with the xB...

a roll of blue tape, a partial belly pan (from the K member to the back doors) and engine off coasting are my best friends

the aero mods wernt much

just blue tape across the grill between the headlights, and the lower grille opening. and just straight aluminum from behind the front wheels wells across the bottom of the car... connected to the bottom of the car through a couple holes that i drilled in the "frame rails" (the thick steel runners under the car) with a couple rivets

tanabe NF210 springs with 17x7 sportmax 006 (2lbs heavier than stock) and 205/40/17 nitto neogens (1lb heavier than stock and .2" shorter in diameter) shaved door handles, front fender lights, and rear bumper lights and a fujita cold air intake, only running the first half of the piping though, so that the filter sits right over top of the trans right next to the engine so that it is a makeshift "warm air intake"

here are a couple pics of the car minus the tape (i have a car club meet/photoshoot tomorrow)

Hi,

From the sounds of it, it might be the 17" wheels that have raised the mileage? What are your RPM's at say 55mph? Is it an auto or a standard?

i have a 5 spd, and the rpms at 55 are just over 2500
