And requiring thermal management (especially if it's going to be starting a car in the winter!) , real charging regulation, and a balancing BMS.

If a car were a mild hybrid it would simplify things to have a single 48v high capacity traction battery. Would there even be a need for contactors that disconnected a 48V traction pack when the car is "off"? It seems all cars should probably at least be mild hybrid so they can shut off when stopped while running accessories, start with the traction motor/batteries, and get a little boost of power so the engine could be undersized. Maybe a 1kWh battery pack?

The RAM and JEEP eTorque have a 48-volt power, 12 cell, 430 watt-hour lithium-ion battery. However, they keep the 12V lead acid battery and charge it through a DC - DC converter. It is a simple belt driven system that replaces the alternator.

Mercedes EQ Boost is a step farther. It gets rid of the starter and alternator and replaces them with a pancake motor between the engine and transmission. The engine is "beltless" with the A/C and water pump, and an electric supercharger powered by 48V motors. It has a 0.8 kWh li-ion battery and gets rid of the 12V starting battery.

Same thing he does with all the other threads?

I know you're sensitive about staying on topic for threads of your interest.

I'll have you know it was the video you linked that I watched that had me curious about OT subjects.

Well, I'm certainly not going to say anything if it's all my fault.

Back on topic Freebeard, I see the least expensive option is a bit over $17,000. What is your reservation price at? Are they going to make them at the lower price for everyone or just those who got in early?

Their published price point when I threw down for a reservation was $11.9K. This grew to $12.9K. I always figured to buy in at $15K.

Getting production numbers up is key to to making further reductions.

AFAIK some pancake motors now provide full-hybrid ability.

I went looking wishing to see something like $12k. There are no incentives around here and technically we aren't even allowed to purchase them although I assume I could figure a way around that as I would pick it up at the factory if I were going to get one. The problem with needing volume means they will probably always be on the wrong side of supply vs demand for the consumer. It would have been a great stock to buy with the deposit, as maybe that would have offset the cost hikes.
