With the aerodynamic nose of the Type II, there is just enough room to slip a spare tire into the gap.

Didn't Ford and Mazda have some shared models at the time?
As the other user pointed out, they did share the SUVs/Trucks but there was also the Mazda 121 / Ford Festiva from 1988-1991.
