Automobile Registration Costs

I just renewed my Civic's registration. It was $64 for my "Wildlife Conservation" plate and included a new tab and a state parks pass. My truck is on Collector plates so after that first fee (about $100, I think) it's got free registration for life.

I'm wondering what the rest of you pay to register your cars. Do you go with the cheapest option to save money, or force yourself to donate like I do? Some of you have to get your cars inspected... and how much does all this cost in Europe?

It seems like a small thing, but $64 is a full 16-gallon tank of $4 gas, or a couple decent dinners for two!

My KIA was $34. I bought it for $500 and they did some crazy math including the weight age of the car and my driving stats.

Wow. The cheapest possible registration here in beautiful British Columbia, provided by our mandatory government run public insurance (aka monopoly), is $1100 per year INCLUDING a 43% safe driving discount. Collision, fire, theft, etc is extra. My 16 year old Civic costs $1400 year with full coverage.

So insurance and registration are combined in B.C.?

In Ontario...

$98 for the annual plate renewal ("registration") $49 in northern Ontario.

$30 + tax for emissions testing every other year. (Old cars, EV's & hybrids exempt). Repairs, if needed, are extra.

We only have to get a mechanical fitness inspection (safety standards "certification") when transferring ownership (ie. buying/selling a car which the new owner wants to drive on public roads). My mechanic charges around $90 for the inspection (required repairs are extra).

Yup, combined. Emission testing is every other year (for a 1992+ car/truck) for $60, but they are getting rid of that at the end of the year. No mechanical inspection when changing ownership, which is a joke, really.

Insurance is extra for us. The Metro costs a whopping $175/yr (liability only) though lol. The Prius is $285/yr with collision.

Interesting. I remember my '81 Rabbit being about $46 or something in Minnesota. The Probe wasn't far off.

I'm surprised that BC combines it with insurance.

And, $200 for insurance?? Even with Hagerty my truck would be over $500, and that's the cheapest I've found, where I'd actually be able to drive it. Civic is $140/mo liability compared to $55/mo in Minnesota. Michigan is expensive, but at least we don't have inspections.

I'm 31 with a clean driving record. I use geico, its the cheapest place I've found, and its easy to get a quote, etc.
