Come to think of it.... I DO own a bank drive thru window. 5/4ths" thick bullet-proof glass. THAT WOULD make a nice controller enclosure!

Good lord...

What ever was the reason you came across 1.25" bullet proof glass?

I mean, seriously... at what point in your life, previous to this moment, did you think "Hey, I could really use a sheet of 1.25 inch thick bullet proof bank drive thru window glass..."?

Well, I was already removing it from the bank, and I thought it would make a REALLY COOL coffee table....

What, the money wasn't enough? "Removing it from the bank..." LOL.

Well, I can't say much, b/c that happens to me alot. It's how I end up with half the crap I have, usually.

"Gee, I bet I could make something really neat out of this :insert object here:"

8 months later, I find it sitting in the garage, and use it for something completely unrelated to why I picked it up in the first place.

To you, I say "Good find!"

Or, use it to make an aquarium, and have Silver Dollars swimming in it.

200 miles

My new "EV Only" reset odometer just rolled over 200 miles.

My wife was in the car when it happened. We were coming back from the grocery store.

I have never owned a car with less than 100,000 miles on it. It was pretty cool to see 000200.0 miles on the odometer.

I took the Metro out for a trip today that I usually would have used the truck for due to range.

The location is almost exactly 10 miles away - each direction - for a 20 mile round trips.

I figured it should be no problem, because I once went 23 miles on the 6-battery pack last summer. With 12 batteries, I should be able to go, what, 30 to 40 miles?

I stopped at a few places on the way out, including the local "Members Only" golf course.

I had a long conversion there a while back with the head maintenance guy, Smokey, a while back. I was trying to locate a lead of batteries or a used charger at the time.

I stopped in and showed him the car. Overall he was very impressed. He actually invited me to stop back sometime once I had all the "spit & polish on it" to show to club members!

Anywho, I drove off to where I was going, and on the way back, my batteries really started to take a dive right around 15 miles or travel.

15!!?!!? What's going on!? I still had 5 more miles to get home.
I took it real slow to minimize amperage.

I was planning on stopping at the grocery store anyways, so I plugged in there while I shopped for about ten minutes.

When I came out, the charger indicated 3/4 full!
Huh? What's going on? I know I can't get 3/4 of a full charge from a 15 amp outlet in ten minutes!

All I can figure is that the batteries are imbalanced enough from each other that it's causing the charger to not properly fill them back up.

Having USED batteries may be a really good reason to have individual chargers instead of a single high-voltage one.

I bet if you balanced them and maybe took out a couple of the worst performers the pack would be fine.

I was just chatting on the phone with my friend and talking about how to convert a car to electric, batteries look to be a huge problem. He is a mechanic and thinks he can get Interstate batteries where he works, I don't know if they make any decent batteries.

He works one of two places, one 2.5 miles from home (but he would travel home for lunches), and the other about 7 miles from home, but he could probably charge up during the day.

He has an 83 Scirocco II and is looking to get an 83 4-door Diesel Rabbit. The chassis' are basically the same so he could convert one or the other, or swap between them.

Imbalanced batteries are a real big thing. One single battery can take down your whole pack! I was using individual chargers, but they were three different generations of the same model with three different charging patterns so some of the batteries were slightly out of balance with the rest. I now have a K&W BC-20 charger doing my whole pack, but all these batteries are new and only get slightly out of balance when sitting for two long. (PakTrakr drains batteries 1 and 7 in my pack)

My advice would be to charge each battery, one at a time, with a single 12 volt charger, then take a 4-5 mile trip and hook up your big charger again. Just to get the batteries back to being even.
