And I wouldn't say the MPG gains from this project are small. It's all relative, I suppose.

And now you can tell everyone you drive a plug-in hybrid.

This thread has inspired me to present another take on the alternator delete idea...

How about a solar hybrid with passive electric propulsion?

Instead of removing the alternator, convert it into an electric motor that can be used to provide 2-5 hp of assist? Plenty of DIY you tube videos on this topic.

For battery power use lithium batteries that can be both charged from a roof mounted solar panel and/or plugging in to the grid via home solar.

For starting the car (which lithium batteries do not like) add supercapacitors to handle the instantaneous amperage spikes.

By theory, you could effectively double that mpg improvement to 20 percent or more since the load on the motor for a given task will be dropped
significantly. Free HP.

I am in the middle of this DIY solar project and hopefully can come back with some noteworthy positive results.

I just watched one of my favorite presenters 46 minutes after it went up:
I'd considered the EcoFlo Delta previously, but he does a good job, teardown and all. My thought when I watched it was that if I put one in my Superbeetle, I could have an ICE vehicle-to-microgrid situation.

Yes it would be a micro grid, but horribly inefficient imho. 1gal fuel turned into mostly heat, but it would be handy for really long periods of power outages to keep the fridge cold.

We're into "fridge" weather here now. If power goes out, just wheel the fridge outside.

I do like that I can keep beer in the garage and it's the right temp.

If I put my homebrew into the garage tonight, it would maybe freeze and explode the bottle

I'm not sure if my garage ever freezes. It should if the insulation is good enough in the house and door. It gets mighty cold, but I don't recall it freezing.

That's just one scenario. The device is the beating heart of a sytem with solar, AC and 12V inputs and three outputs (AC, USB-A and -C).

Solar panels go on the carport, not the vehicle.
