I just found out today that briggs and stratton makes a 35hp nearly 1L engine.

That’s the same engine that’s in my commercial mower. It’s a beast but it sips fuel. It’s known as the big block of Briggs engines.


In case you didn’t know.

Twin cyl. Briggs Vanguard engines are made by Daihatsu which is a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation.

Single cyl. Briggs Vanguard engines are made by Mitsubishi.

Figure out how to turn a wheel from the Leaf into a PTO. Trailer the stump grinder, jack the wheels off the ground, then grind away.

As an aside, I normally cut a stump only an inch above the ground, then I'll cut a hatch pattern into it. Would be easy to at least bring it down to ground level with hand tools from there.

I cut my stumps like this, but lower to the ground

I don't remember when was the last time I saw a single-cylinder Mitsubishi engine, yet their twins and triples are quite often used as boat engines (even though such marine versions are usually rebranded by third-parties).

I have been watching some youtube stump grinder vids, 13 and 14hp stump grinders seem kind of meh.
I want to be in fear of losing life limb, eye sight along with everyone nearby when using this thing.
It's going to need more power.

You mean kinda like the multigang huffed big block lawnmower from the Chevy Chase movies?

I dunno, I can see where a 50 hp heavy flywheel diesel powered stump grinder would be the limit of how big you can go. Or: the German coal digger for use on sequoia stumps

You mean those gigantic stationary engines which can barely turn 1000 RPM, yet deliver a surprisingly outstanding low-end torque? Or something more similar to those Yanmar horizontal-singles which AFAIK don't exceed 30hp at 2200 RPM?

More like the yanmar, but having played with aforementioned grinders, find they bog sometimes. The heavy flywheel tends to stop the bog as would not feeding so fast.

Actually thinking about it, a micro turbine geared 10,000:1 might have enough torque

At least monthly I see used harbor freight 22hp predator engines for sale for $500 to $600 and a used 30hp+ v-twin engines for sale a few times a year for around a thousand.
