Can't get past 36 mpg in 06 corolla

No aero or eco mods, It is rated 38 mpg highway, I tried driving it grandma style, like I stole it, normal, AC on and off, it always gets 36 mpg. Every fillup. Amazing.

I just past 36 mpg in my 99 Camry but I've had to work at it haha. You could easily pass 40 mpg.

Someone can certainly get over 36 in it. I think the real question is, can you?

Drive at 55 MPH on the freeway, and I bet your MPG will go up...

Well, bandit86, make that 2 gold Corolla's that are going to work their way up to 40 and beyond. My 04 CE is bone stock with no mods and some Firestones (FR710). My first 2 tanks mimic your results as well.

Seems like this car needs a grill block and belly pan for starters. Actually, a scan gauge or ultra gauge would be a good start too. I need to get one...

My climate is similar to yours, so as long as we keep track of our mods and FE over time, we should be able to see what works. I think some EOC / kill switch mod, and maybe some 2004 prius oem 15" 14lb wheels with some LRR tires would be about another year down the road, but in the mix for my commute (half of it is city).

In my case, I am getting used to driving a stick again, and once the novelty wears off, I am sure I will not be doing 75, or shifting at 3,000 - 4,000 like I occasionally do just to have some fun.

If i drive my Malibu Maxx as hard as I have driven the Corolla, I would get speeding tickets. The Toyota keeps me under the speed limits while still having some fun.

I think 40 plus in mixed 60% hwy is obtainable.

Cheers, Sean

OK, here's how you do it, guys. starting with a cold engine. I get 55+ mpg on 30 mile country road trips to & from Costco, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Harbor Freight, my pharmacy, etc. Those bread & butter trips make up for the <40 mpg bad trips that seem to always happen during a tank.

I got a new action cam, so I'm going to try to remake the video tomorrow. I'm hoping to get 0-60 mpg in 5 miles with a warm engine.

I forget where I first saw it, but I just want to say that Sentra SE-R's hypermiling video is the most helpful one I've seen. If you're willing to drive like that, the results speak for themselves.

A scanguage would do the most benefit- then mods, UGB, LGB, air dam, belly pan.

And as Mcrews will chime in, air up the tires!

The good news is I got 60 mpg within 2 miles with a warm engine today, and 63 mpg on a 10 mile loop. The bad news is my video wasn't good. I strapped the action cam on my head, and it gave good road views, but the UG display was underexposed most of the time.

I will mount the action cam to my driver side window with a view of the instruments and gearshift knob, showing little of the view out the window. This will improve the lighting and avoid the head/camera movement that dominates the original video. I'll reshoot the video Monday or Wednesday. It will be steadier and will show the instruments and kill switch use during the whole drive.

The biggest hypermiling factors IMO are keeping speed down, and coasting as much as possible.

I have a scangauge2, watch it like a hawk. What I have is 8 country blocks with stops signs to deal with, both coming and going. I know if I drive 55 I can get I to mid 50 mpg for long periods, but every fillup works to 36mpg. Long/short/fast/slow/cold/hot/AC-on/AC/off its all the same

My corolla has a built in fuel shutoff, makes cruising to a stop sign a noticeable improvement

Weird.
I'd expect you to get better average MPG when you have extended periods over 50 mpg.

Are you coasting out of gear ?
That's what got my MPG rising again after what I felt like topping out .

Or you could look through the list of hypermiling tips - even if you've been there a couple of times before - and pick up a few more fuel-saving habits.
