Yep, the 6G73 and the 2.5 MPFI are the engines I was referring to.

If I had to choose one, I'd frankly rather have the V6 mated to turbo gears.

The V6 will inherently make more torque because of a smoother revolution with more power strokes, but use the same amount of fuel per revolution due to displacement. (There are variables, but I don't really care...)

Mated to the turbo gears, which are longer than snot trails from quick snails, and a nice, long overdrive at the end, you could easily take a 2200# car down the highway at 60-65 MPH just off idle. (Like 1k-1.2k RPM.) The 2.5 I4 can also do that, but I think where the V6 would really shine is during acceleration, where it's higher torque/RPM value could really be exploited for the best acceleration for the least fuel.

I only used the transmission identification to qualify my choice. If the gears were fixed, it would depend wholly on the gear ratios as to which I would rather have, because one would be closer to an efficient range than the other with different gears.

Vehicle weight, of course, I chose 2200 LBS because I'm pretty sure the vehicles that have both of those engines weight right in around there. (Haven't looked it up, just a guess.)

My personal pick would be a 1999-2001 Honda Insight 5 speed. With a 71 mpg EPA rating, I'm sure some of us here could hit 100mpg without any mods at all.

I'm also very happy with my 1997 Toyota Tercel. The 95-99s were the most powerful AND efficient, and they last almost forever.

If you want a brand new car, the only ones I would even consider are the Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris. Just my 2.2 cents.

It has.

Depending on how extreme* you're willing to take your driving, you can squeeze well over 100 mpg (US) from an unmodified 1st gen 5-speed Insight.
(* by extreme, I mean relatively slow, and using pulse & glide almost exclusively.)

Edit: not just talking about individual "segments" or trips, but whole tanks.

These folks squeezed out 164mpg in a virtually unmodified insight, in what can only be called "incredibly impractical driving".

The original EPA city/highway rating on the 2000 Insight was 61/70, which has been revised to 49/61. I figure if you just jump in it and drive the speed limit, you'll get in the 60's in real world driving.

just like him, i meant through normal (ecomodder) driving



theres actually quite a few cars that hit 100mpg with "contest" driving techniques
