Were both pictures taken during the same time of the year? Taking picture of a beach at high and low tides would also look quite different.

How many fertilizers are petroleum-based?

None, allegedly.

Phosphorous is mined with diesel powered earth movers. And transported around the world on diesel trains and ships. So in essence, fertilizer is made from liquid fossil fuel. And we are using it faster than we are finding more (phosphorous and oil). The USA has 25 years left and so will be relying on importing most of what the world needs for us to keep feeding it. In 200 years we will be desperately trying to scrape it back up from the ocean floor where it has washed away. With no fossil fuel left for our machines and ships to work with.

The scientific process is refinement.

Humans can make .6kWh in a 9 hour work day.
That ain't even enough to run a car AC.

This so reminds me of Larry Niven's "Destiny Road", where humans colonize a planet lacking in potassium.

It turns out we had our 'free energy' the whole time and look what we did with it. (Why do they call it 'rolling coal' when it's made from diesel?)

Sea water contains everything. Nano-scale porous membranes will separate them, something we could never do before Buckminsterfullerine. It's also something we could choose not to do now. We should choose wisely.

edit:
Can't sleep, thinking about what I'd said. Mercury isn't immiscible in seawater. That's why it goes straight to the fats in fish. There may be others.

Phosphate Cycle
Phosphorus occurs naturally in rocks and other mineral deposits. During the natural process of weathering, the rocks gradually release the phosphorus as phosphate ions which are soluble in water and the mineralize phosphate compounds breakdown.

I'll have to read this when I get time.

I think what I had in mind was in this thread somewhere. It showed the enormous amount of energy and resources needed to build various renewable energy. The website had all the data in a single scrollable page. It also showed nuclear to be the wisest choice to meet growing demand, but showed how long it takes to complete such projects. Can't remember the name of the site now.

I agree that we need to choose wisely what to spend the rest of our current one time fossil energy wealth on. Right now we are totally locked in to a system of wealth distribution the requires turning most of it into ever growing amounts of goods and services to be consumed in order to keep the money digits flowing with GDP growth to pay interest on ever increasing debt.
.
Sea Water process: Keep in mind the scale of our consumption. Right now we are scooping up mountains of minerals with diesel powered earth movers. Do you really think we can deploy neworks of filters to replace this? Where do we get the energy to pump millions of tons of water through complex filter stacks to get a few tons of minerals. All of these Startrek future concepts do not add up for 10 billion people. Humans and our livestock now outweigh wild land vertebrates 50:1

Energy Reality Project had some decent napkin math. We need to "Run The Numbers" as we try to get out of this jam.

They're glaciers. They exist year round. They are rivers of ice.

They don't melt and reform each year.

Fertilizers are often made from natural gas.

Who was it who said, "Give me a place to stand and a fulcrum and I can move the world"?

Bet he didn't even know about the Camarinal Sill.
