There's a glaring inaccuracy in this line, though: five hundred years ago, no one (in Western Europe) thought the Earth was flat. We've known the Earth is spherical since Eratosthenes accurately measured its circumference in the third century BCE. Columbus couldn't get funding for his voyage because he insisted that the Earth was smaller than it is--the only way a Western route to Asia would be feasible--and got laughed off by every potential investor except the Spanish royals.

The wind turned west and temperatures dropped to the low 30s (Celsius). And humidity is untypically low, plus that wind. It was nice-ish. Google Fit says 11.21 km. That's about my daily average since the stent, the heat wave did not get in the way yet.

25 degrees now (22:30), but the wind turned east again. It won't drop much further.
Minimum day temperature for Friday is estimated at 25 Celsius. The record is 23.2 or so (this June), used to be 22.

Agreed, which is why I don't see vertical farming taking off anytime soon.

Instead I see improvements in automation increasing productivity. Heck, if robotics could be sufficiently improved, it could all but eliminate the need for pesticides, for instance. I've enjoyed the musings on battery powered tractors too. Totally feasible if they go autonomous.

Last time I was in Oregon I was a little kid.We went to the World's Fair in Seattle.

My whole high school senior class (all eleven!) took a trip to the Seattle World's Fair. I could have seen the Tokyo World's Fair on R&R if I'd extended my tour. I declined.

Bucky Fuller talked about how people would go home to sleep in slums while the typewriters stayed in air-conditioned office buildings. Those huge skyscrapers dedicated to insurance companies and such could be gutted and repurposed.

Personally, I'm more in favor of flotillas of greenhouses in bays and estuaries. And geodesic fish farms floating in the open ocean.

Fairs were pretty much over by the 1970s or 80s. The Eiffel Tower from 1887 and the Space Needle from 1962 make nice bookends.

The belief in a flat Earth was limited to mostly Europe for a limited time. A misinterpretation of the four corners mentioned in the Bible.

Where the modern interpretation of a disk under a dome came from I'm not sure, but I suspect James Blish's Cities in Flight.
