318TDS is bl**dy awful and the 325TDS has the possibility of wallet disabling fuel pump failures. You'd be better off with a Pug 406 HDi smoker and hyper-mile the 535.

Get the 405, you can do some mini-cabbing to put fuel in the 535 at the same time.

ah the 535.... i had the more advanced, faster replacement the E34 540i Touring....not very economical with 530i manual tranny which lacks the 6th gear...i also had a 633csi with a swapped 92 535i engine...basically your engine.

anywho...the 535i M30 engine is an antique...SOHC 8V with primitive "flapper door" fuel metering...

jank that out and drop in the 3.2L M3 engine out of an e36....

535 e34! The iron pig, as we call them here.

m30b35 definitely is one of the nicest engines ever built. The one I had the pleasure to drive went down to 8.8 liters driven sensibly, not too bad for such a big heap of metal.

The m60 lump has too many valves and cylinders, and not as nice power delivery!

I wouldnt fit an s50 in an e34-better just to buy an m5..

aero84- you may be onto something- these old cars just keep tooling along, and I cna get 30+ UK mpg out it if I try.. but the real fun is in the grunt from 2000rpm- makes it "lively" in the twisties

Oh i'm gonna have to disagree on the "not as nice power delivery"

stump pulling torque down low and yet it still screams up to the redline...very nice linear pull...and man they sound great!

have a listen here!

thats my old 530i Touring with the 3L v8 (that was a horrible engine...) swapped out to a 4L V8 and the autotragic swapped out with the 530i 5spd manual...thing hauled ass for a 3800lbs car and i had the opportunity to run a 1991 M5 and reeled him...so yay for me!

No, not my car (my only e34 is a 525 24V, and that one isn't even working right now...) nor the one got the 8.8 liters with - but a nice car neevertheless. Picture taken one year ago on a BMW meeting in the bavarian forest.

Did I mention I really like the m30?
