Having driven a medium duty roll-back for a few years, I may be able to shed some light of the trucker's POV. I carried wrecks, parts will fall off. Sometimes they are little bolts, sometimes it may be something larger, like a windshield. If someone is close, it seems like they are looking for new paint/windshield/money, and I don't want the hassle.

With the entire freeway, having someone riding me, also meant they might not be paying attention. I was trying to get mileage out of the old girl, and I didn't need someone interfering.

I would guarantee a class A wouldn't feel getting hit from behind with minimal speed differential. I lost a wheel/tire/hub off of a early 00s Civic that I was stinging. 70 MPH with its control arms tearing up the freeway. The first I noticed was when a 5-series flashed me.

ExDelayed, I was on many supply missions in Afghanistan. We got cargo straps as tight as we could and then called to the vehicle behind us throughout the convoy, asking how our load looked. It seemed completely useless, if it was a gun truck, they always told us that we were good, until they radioed up that we lost something.

Exactly! It would be something that would never fall off, if the vehicle wasn't being transported. "I don't know how, but it looks like the pistons feel out of the engine. Just the pistons, everything else is still there."

That's pretty much a daily ritual, here. Double-padlocks are a must.

That's because if you're in a gun truck, anything that isn't an actual or potential threat looks great. The only reason they noticed stray cargo is because tomorrow it'll be a potential IED to worry about.
