Hopefully there will be aftermarket battery retrofits with more range for older EVs in a few years. Being able to change energy sources with no vehicle mods is a great EV benefit too. An EV charged by coal electricity can switch to renewable energy much easier than a gas/diesel vehicle!

But with companies locking down components that have to have an encrypted digital hand shake with other components or it will be seen as invalid... That makes it hard to just swap batteries.

Jones says LNTs are less efficient and can only scavenge about 60% of NOx from the exhaust. SCR is much more effective when fully warmed up with a percentage clean-up rate “in the high 90s”, he adds. For small cars using LNTs, a switch to SCR to satisfy RDE may pose a problem because the SCR system is more bulky and expensive. That may force manufacturers of A and B segment cars to stick with downsized petrol engines, but dropping small diesel engines will make it harder to meet their fleet CO2 average."

NOx would really only be hazardous in dense populations. The primary form produced from combustion is NO, and it has a half life of less than 2 hours. NO2 is the second most common form, it it readily breaks down from sunlight. The total average half life of NOx in daylight is 4 hours.

Maybe it's a good idea to not allow too many diesels in Tokyo, but for places like Montana it doesn't matter one bit.

So these urea systems exist in the off chance that you're driving an F-250 through Manhattan.

Sure matters here in NYC, with all the diesel spewing buses & trucks. As well as LA, Or any major city around the world. Especially places where motorbikes without catalytic converters are the main form of transportation & gas landscaping tools roam free, NOx can get high.

Well I did mention Manhattan.

Cities and counties should be free to set their own rules. A strict federal standard doesn't make sense though if 99% of the area of the US doesn't suffer from NOx emissions.

I'm all for the progression of technology bringing about a progression in clean environment, but some things are going too far; like urea injection in Montana.
