Maybe put some inner tube over the joint with zipties or even some hose clamps?

Latest problem!
Misfire!
(Mot my engine pic)
I pulled the plugs and one electrode was quite worn down. It even seemed slightly loose, which I've never seen before in a spark plug.
I cleaned & re-gapped them all, plus tidied the electrodes in the dist cap & rotor. I'll swap in the plugs from my parts car's parts car (good thing I kept the engine) if they look decent.
Parking the irksome wee beastie SOON. 3 days & counting! |

I remember on my 1987 VW Golf, it was the left side CV joint boot that failed, because it was quite exposed. I learned the hard way about driving in deep snow (when I hadn't shoveled) and when cold temps made the rubber more brittle.

Variable spark plug gap! (TM)
I've never seen this before! The car started running like poop last week, so I checked the usual suspects and found one plug with a loose electrode.
Check the gap....
Right side up (how I hold it when gapping it):
Upside down (how it sits inside the engine):
No wonder I was struggling for 70 MPG on the last couple of trips.  |

best tank yet: 75 mpg US
I knew I was on to something with that variable spark plug gap. Who's with me??
The SG said only 71.5. I did my usual slow 3-click fill, so we'll see on the next fill if it was a bit short or not.
And, yes, I'm STILL driving this irksome thing. My insurance company didn't reply to a recent inquiry about changing cars, I and I haven't been pestering them enough.
The latest annoyance (aside from the CV joint): front end is starting to get rattly -- at least one inner tie rod going, based on a quick inspection.

I'm rolling a '98 3/5 Metro now. Had a very interesting trip home what with the seized front brakes.  Temporarily un-seized 'em and got home, should be about 50 mpg. I'll find out next fill. Poor thing has bad rust issues but the engine and trans run quite nice except for a low idle/stalling thing.
