746 watts is 1 hp, right? 500 watts may not seem like much, but if you don't have to generate it over a 400 mile trip, then the savings should start stacking up.

justme, if auto parts stores do sell the clutches separately, that'd be good to know. I've always been told I couldn't get one separately. Although, I may not have as much use now since I installed the underdrive pulley.

I thought I remember hearing that normal cruising typically consumed only 7-8 HP. (Obviously, steady-state conditions, and probably referencing a sedan.)

So saving 1/2 HP could be a large percentage.

A smaller engine car that spins its P/S up to 3k to 4k could be sending well over 1hp to the P/S pump.
Those small cars that spin 3-4k tend to only needs 10 to 15 horsepower to over come drag and rolling resistance and maintain speed. Removing a 1hp load off the engine could be pretty big, to a smaller car.

What are your gains with the underdrive pulleys, are they the Lightweight?

Why? I've had my power steering pump disabled for quite some time and the only time I really notice the lack of assist is when the car is stationary. How about you? Have you tried it?
