However, that engine really is ancient, and I doubt that they could hit their fuel economy targets with it, even adding sequential port injection (which the turbo and I think 4-cylinder versions had).

Also, I think the only engine still being produced in that family is a 1.0 DOHC 4-cylinder for Pakistan. Not exactly my choice for maximum fuel efficiency.

Sure the G-series engine is kinda outdated, but is still not really a bad option at all. A 12-valve head would be a good improvement, alongside MPFI which was only available for the turbocharged versions. It actually seems to make sense to use the G-series because of its light weight and a good throttle response for an engine at its displacement class.

Took a bit too long for me. I was happy with a small Aspire about 6 years ago and wanted an Elio 6 years ago; but more large SUVs, RVs, pickups and delivery vans were crowding roads more and more - very quickly. Worried me enough to jump from 40 m.p.g. to a 20 m.p.g. pickup. I doubt I could go back to "small".

A rotating yellow light on the roof and a placard on the back ought to buy you some space.

The 'Confined Space' warning sign would be appropriate. A multicolor paint scheme helps as well. I have driven all sizes of car and light/medium trucks safely. There is a myth that mass alone makes a vehicle safe. The design geometry and materials used are crucial to passenger protection. Trucks take longer to stop than a sedan. Most cars and light trucks weigh around 3500 lb. If you are truly worried about crash protection then wear a helmet and knee pads.

I've been known to drive with a neck brace when needed. I'd tell everyone that it's like the HANS things that NASCAR drivers wear.

Christopher Jordan -- My friends made that transition ... after they got T-boned. :shrugs:

Maybe they should buy the rights to the old BMW K75 fuel injected 3 ? Smooth, torquey and 75 hp. Not bad fuel consumption either.

On off the shelf unit is the best solution, even Tucker had to go this route.

Got me thinking about fitting the entire driveline of a Russian IMZ-Ural motorcycle into an Elio. Well, even the newer water-cooled engine in the R1200 would be an interesting option...
